The Bienal del Cartel Bolivia BICeBé is an international design and visual arts conference in South America. In 2019 they asked designers to submit posters exploring “disinformation,” or the intentional misuse of information to mislead.
My submission drew on visual language from American & British pop art (i.e. halftone printing techniques) to connect popular culture – in this case, contemporary culture – to the spread of disinformation. It explores a loss of confidence in traditional media by asserting that information, when manipulated, becomes disinformation.
Process
Designers love seeing processes so damn much. No shame though, I’m included in that statement too.
I started this project by exploring symbols and concepts related to disinformation, hoping to eventually incorporate a visual pun.
After settling on a concept, I tapped into my art history background to find visual motifs that would further my idea – in this case, halftone printing techniques. I produced the final image in Illustrator by matching a five-color image trace of a reference image to five custom halftone patterns.
